Dr. Katz had a palpable passion for music, both as an educator and a professional musician. She earned both her Bachelor of Arts degree and her Master of Arts degree in Music Education from Kean before furthering her studies at Rutgers University where she earned her Doctor of Education in Educational Theory, Policy, and Administration in 1989.

Katz's career was a notable one. As an educator, she dedicated herself to nurturing the musical talents of her students, fostering a love for music that resonated far beyond the classroom. Her commitment to excellence in education was matched by her prowess as a professional musician, where she showcased her talents in various venues and collaborative performances.

Upon graduating from Kean, Sharon worked as an instrumental music teacher for Green Brook Township School District and then Woodbridge Township School District, before she ultimately retired from the Plainfield Board of Education. While serving in the public school system, Dr. Katz also taught as an adjunct professor at Union County College for over a decade.

In addition to her professional career as an educator, Dr. Katz was a member of several professional associations and civic organizations, including the Clark Public Library Board of Trustees where Katz served for ten years in various roles including as board president, vice president and treasurer.
